Item Description
木谷信夫 Kitani Nobuo / 静峰 大家芳男 Seiho Oie Yoshio
This exceptional suzuribako (inkstone box) is a masterwork of Wajima lacquerware (Wajima-nuri), one of Japan's most celebrated and technically demanding lacquer traditions. Crafted through the meticulous collaboration of makie artist Kitani Nobuo and lacquer master (nushi) Seiho, this piece exemplifies the finest standards of Japanese urushi (lacquer) artistry.
The box is finished in deep, lustrous black lacquer and adorned with an exquisite tessen (clematis flower) design executed in delicate gold makie — the traditional technique of dusting precious metallic powders onto wet lacquer to create shimmering pictorial decoration. The clematis motifs are rendered with remarkable refinement, their flowing petals and tendrils capturing the graceful elegance of this beloved Japanese flower.
Wajima-nuri is distinguished by its rigorous multi-step process: a wooden base (kiji) reinforced with layers of jino-ko (local diatomaceous earth mixed with lacquer), followed by the application of hemp cloth at stress points, and an intricate succession of more than 75 hand-applied lacquer coats before the final makie decoration is applied. The result is a surface of extraordinary depth, durability, and luminosity.
The piece is accompanied by its original tomobako (artist's signed wooden box), a mark of authenticity and provenance for Japanese traditional craft. This suzuribako is a sophisticated collector's item and a superb example of living Japanese lacquer heritage.
