Title
Turkana Headrest – Kenya – Wood & Leather – Ex Alan Donovan Collection
Details
Origin: Turkana people
Country: Kenya
Materials: Hardwood, leather
Dimensions: 16.5 x 7 x H 19 cm
Period: Mid-20th century
Provenance: Ex Alan Donovan collection (Los Angeles / Nairobi)
Description
Refined Turkana headrest of particularly elegant and architectural form. The composition is beautifully balanced: two long arched legs support a short, gently curved pillow, while a leather tie links the uprights and introduces a subtle linear tension at the center.
#afrohemian26
This example is distinguished by the remarkable visual contrast within the wood itself, where lighter sapwood and darker heartwood coexist naturally, creating a striking bicolour effect. This interplay of tones enhances both the sculptural clarity and the decorative presence of the object.
The flanks are finely incised with delicate motifs, adding rhythm and refinement without disturbing the purity of the silhouette. The surface bears a rich, deep patina consistent with age and long use.
A fine and uncommon example, combining ethnographic authenticity, strong formal presence, and excellent provenance.
Condition
Overall good condition with age-related wear. One leg was broken in the past and has been restored. Minor surface wear, small marks, and light abrasions consistent with age and use. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The headrest only.
