Biography of Giancarlo Montuschi:
Giancarlo Montuschi was born in Faenza in 1952 and began his artistic career while still very young. A native Toscano by adoption (lives and works in Anghiari since 1976), Montuschi has had numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In his work one perceives the direct contact with Pop Art breathing from the 1970s and the link with Faenza ceramics, a city that gave him his origins. From ceramics in his work, one detects nostalgia for color due to the type of paste and tonal timbres. Painting captivates him with the world of fairy tales, medieval bestiaries and then with the sagas of comics, particularly Flash Gordon. Blue is a color dear to him, and the blue, sexless figures of Magi with a conical hat in communication with the starry macrocosm dominate his works as a trademark and recur throughout his production. Today, with the Astro-Pop series, in a contemporary landscape borrowed from American cinema, elements originating from a sci-fi inspired imagination of the 1930s and 1940s merge. The different outcomes reached over his fifty-year artistic career are today a true, authentic, great wealth. In 2022, Montuschi begins his collaboration with Galleria d’Arte Piero Della Francesca, a historic contemporary art gallery, which mainly deals with his large-format production, exhibiting in December 2022 monumental works such as 2x2 m and 3x2 m. Below is a reasoned chronology of his life and artist’s work, noting that it does not include all exhibitions, only the most important. 1960 At a very young age receives painting prizes in Cesena and at the “Romano Brazzi” in Marina di Ravenna. 1972 Holds his first solo show at Galleria Sire in Faenza. He is then chosen to represent, the only young artist among twelve painters, the province of Ravenna for the twin-mance with Rijeka. 1976 Exhibits at Galleria Sire in Faenza. In November a text by Claudio Spadoni about Post-Pop regarding the artist’s language is published. 1986 Participates in the International Ceramic Prizes of Faenza and Gualdo Tadino. Exhibits at De 20 gallery in Växjö, Sweden, within a group show dedicated to Raku ceramic technique. 1987 Participates in the II World Triennial of Ceramics in Zagreb. Participates successfully for the first time at Arte Fiera in Bologna. He participates in several exhibitions including: Dalla materia alla Forma, Reggiolo (Reggio Emilia), curated by G. Baldo and R. Margonari. Also at the exhibition Con il cuore dell’Arte, Arezzo, Sala d’Arte Contemporanea di S. Ignazio, at Abitare il tempo Fair, Verona and at the III Festival d’Arte di Castelnuovo di Farfa. 1988 Awarded at the Vallauris International Ceramic Competition. Personal exhibition at Selearte Gallery, Participates in Tecné group show at Libreria Nanni in Bologna. Marcello Venturoli writes about him this year. 1989 Participates in the Suzzara Prize, then curated by the best of Italian criticism, and in the Faenza Ceramic Biennale. Also in the group Eppur si muove Palazzo Pretorio of Sansepolcro and at Smaland Museum of Växjö, Sweden. Participates in Scarperentola, a collective conceived by Samuele Mazza that will tour several European and extra-European capitals. 1991 Installation of “L’opera al Nero”, Galleria Fluxia, Chiavari. 1992 Solo at Galleria “Il Gianicolo”, Perugia, with a presentation catalog curated by Giuliano Serafini and at Galleria “l’Idioma” of Ascoli Piceno. 1993 Solo at the Faenza 20th Century Ceramics Hall, presented by Galleria Ken’s Art of Florence. Participation in the outdoor exhibition “Terre Liberate” in Monteroni d’Arbia, presented by Galleria Gagliardi of San Gimignano, curated by Giancarlo Boiani. 1994 Participation in various events organized by the Firenze group “Mano d’Opera”. Participation in the Glass and Art National Exhibition of paintings and sculptures on vases produced by Valdarnesi glassworks. 1995 Solo shows in Arezzo (Contemporanea Gallery), Città di Castello (Il Pozzo Gallery) and Florence (Ken’s Art Gallery). Takes part in Arezzo 95, a collective of the latest generations of Arezzo artists, curated by Michele Loffredo and introduced by Enrico Crispolti. 1996 His adopted city, Sansepolcro, dedicates a major retrospective in the spaces of the former Church of San Giovanni where the Baptism of Piero della Francesca was once located, titled Percorsi 1976-1996. Later solo shows in Parma (Viaggi nella Fantasia, Montmartre Gallery), Vicenza (Joannart Gallery). Among them, notable presence at Lontano da Itaca. Creative research and madness in art, organized by Galleria il Gianicolo in Perugia. The artist is named the favorite by readers of the magazine “Quadri e Sculture” among those proposed to represent current Italian art trends at Palazzo Barberini in Rome. 1997 Participates in Art Convention exhibitions, where Italian galleries associated with Altamarea inaugurate simultaneously at their venues with a common catalog the artists’ show. At Spoleto Festival he is present with Galleria Jonnart. 1998 With Galleria Navona 42 of Rome, participates in “Colori su Fonopoli”, in collaboration with Renato Zero. A lover of the “artist’s book”, of which he is also a refined collector, he exhibits these works at the international itinerant exhibition “Original Book”. Named member of the “Jurat de Saint-Emillion”, in Saint-Emillion, and his works are presented in the spaces of the Ceramics Museum, which buys some of them. 2000 Exhibition “Lo specchio che fugge” at Teatro Valle in Rome, organized by Galleria “Navona 42”. Exhibition: “Bestiari immaginari” in Rome (Bibi Bookstore). In the same year, further participations at exhibitions in New York, London, Paris, Vienna, Ghent, Strasbourg, Geneva, Düsseldorf, Milan, Rome, Bologna, Florence, Perugia, Bari. 2001 The Il Gianicolo Centro d’Arte editions publish a monograph dedicated to the artist titled Dipinti, sculture e tecniche miste. An enchanted world between music and magic with a critical essay by Emidio De Albentiis. 2003 Artegraf publishes the Montuschi-Dipinti 1975-2003 monograph, with testimonials by E. De Albentiis and M. Venturoli. 2004 Participates in the exhibition organized by Galleria La loggia of Sansepolcro in its spaces and in those of the Museo Civico on Da de Chirico a Ferroni. The 20th century between epochs, hypotheses and provocations, curated by Giovanni Faccenda and introduced by Vittorio Sgarbi. 2005 Invited by the Republic of Costa Rica to participate in the 51st Venice Biennale in the pavilion of the Italian-Latin American Institute. Initiative promoted by the Museo di Arte Contemporanea Italiana in America and the Italian-Latin American Institute of Rome. For the occasion a catalog of the artist with critical texts by Giuliano Serafini was published. He creates a sketch for the special box of Le Tre Marie panettone, one of the numerous examples of applying his artistic work to industry and craft. 2006 He participates in about fifteen exhibitions and fairs in Italy and abroad. Among them, the exhibition curated by the Italian Institute of Culture of Finland and the Circle of Italians in Finland in Leppävaara. In Innsbruck, Galleria Contemporart presents him at “10 Art internationale Messe”. Ipost- Poste Italiane, on the proposal of Galleria Navona 42, chooses him as Artist of the Year, entrusting him with creating the image for all communications. 2007 He is chosen as a testimonial of the 2nd National Autobiography Festival of Anghiari.
