Peso: [37 gr]

Provenienza: Collezione privata

Rare Lead Bulla of the Knights of Malta (S.M.O.M.) – 17th/18th Century – Commandery Seal

Description
Extremely rare lead seal (bulla) belonging to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem (Knights of Malta). This artifact stands as a historical testament to the administrative and charitable authority of the Order within the Mediterranean and its European Commanderies.

Iconography & Symbolism:
The Cross: The two-barred cross (Patriarchal or Anchored Cross) was frequently employed by the high hierarchies of the Order and featured prominently in the monumental architecture of their estates.

The Figures: The three kneeling figures represent the poor or the infirm under the Order's care, reflecting their core mission: "Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum" (Defense of the Faith and Assistance to the Poor).

Inscription: The legend "DEI · DIVIN..." refers to Divine Providence, a spiritual pillar of the Knights Hospitaller.

Technical Details:
Material: Lead with an original grey-brown patina.

Key Feature: Original red silk cords, the institutional color of the Order of Malta, perfectly preserved. The use of silk indicates that the seal was originally attached to a high-status document, such as a diploma, an investiture, or a magisterial bull.

Dimensions: [diameter 3,8 cm]

Weight: [37 gr]

Condition & Provenance:
The item shows clear signs of age and wear (weathered condition), with a naturally aged patina. The iconography is partially worn but remains identifiable. The silk cords, showing signs of fraying, are remarkably still present, which adds significant historical value

Provenance: Private collection (family heirloom)
