【Product details】

This striking framed lacquer panel depicts an ascending carp climbing a waterfall, a traditional auspicious motif known in Japan as “Shōri” (Ascending Carp). Rooted in the Chinese legend of the Dragon Gate, the carp that successfully ascends the waterfall transforms into a dragon, symbolising perseverance, success, advancement in life, and the overcoming of hardship. The carp is also associated with vitality and longevity due to its strength and ability to thrive even in muddy waters.

The work was created by Shinbo Yusai (真保由斎)(1899–?), one of the leading masters of carved lacquer from the Echizen lacquerware tradition of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture. The panel is executed in the refined chinkin technique, where delicate lines and patterns are hand-carved into layers of black lacquer and accentuated to create remarkable depth and contrast. The scales, fins, and flowing water grasses are rendered with exceptional precision, giving the carp a vivid sense of movement against the deep black lacquer ground.

The panel bears the artist’s signature and kaō seal on the front. It is mounted within its original frame with fabric matting, allowing it to be displayed immediately as a decorative wall artwork.

Shinbo Yusai began studying carved lacquer techniques in 1914 and later received great recognition both in Japan and internationally. His works were purchased by the Imperial Household, and he received commissions from members of the Japanese imperial family, including the Higashikuni and Takeda households. He also exhibited and received awards at international expositions, including the Belgium World Exposition and the Chicago World’s Fair, while earning numerous prizes and selections at major Japanese craft exhibitions. He was recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce as a preserved artistic craft artist and also received a UNESCO Association Award.

Fair to good vintage condition. The lacquer surface shows a few minor scuffs. The hanging cord is missing. The fabric matting shows slight yellowing and some small spots. The wooden frame has a few small chips and minor dents. Please refer to the photos for details.

Dimensions of Frame: approx. H 34.6 cm W 40.6 cm D 2.8 cm
