Description

This is a comparative appreciation set featuring Bizen ware sake vessels and a tea bowl created by different Bizen pottery artists.

The tokkuri sake bottle and ochoko sake cup were made by Bizen ware artist Kenichi Okumoto. The pieces display characteristic Bizen kiln effects such as goma (sesame-like ash patterns), hiiro (scarlet fire coloration), and natural kiln transformations, creating a rustic yet powerful appearance. The tokkuri has a stable rounded form, while the ochoko is pleasantly sized for comfortable use.

The tokkuri can be enjoyed not only as a sake vessel, but also as a small flower vase for seasonal flowers, making it suitable as an interior object for Japanese-style spaces.

The tea bowl is a work titled “Momoyama” in Bizen ware. It features calm firing colors and a soft form, expressing the quiet presence and wabi-sabi aesthetics characteristic of traditional Japanese ceramics.

This combination allows the viewer to appreciate and compare the differences in expression between works from different Bizen artists and kilns, offering a diverse view of Bizen ware through both sake vessels and tea ceramics.

Bizen ware is considered one of the historic foundations of Japanese pottery tradition.
Also known as “Inbe-yaki,” Bizen ware follows the philosophy of “First clay, second firing, third craftsmanship.” Using high-quality hiyose clay and long firings fueled by pine wood, various kiln effects such as goma, sangiri, elm-bark texture, hi (fire markings), hiiro, and blue-toned coloration are naturally produced. Even pieces with minimal variation are highly valued for their natural clay texture, known as “tsuchiaji.”

The linear marks visible on the rim of the tea bowl are not cracks, but natural traces created during the firing and production process. They do not affect functionality. In addition, the rim is not perfectly circular, reflecting the natural irregularities unique to handmade pottery.

The original wooden box and artist biography sheet are included.
