Northeast Africa 089 (NEA 089)
Libya
Classification: Lunar meteorite (troct. anorth. melt breccia)
History: This rock was reportedly found by falconers in June 2024 near Lake Mukhayli in northeastern Libya and was bought later by Mr. Mohamed Lamin Muftah.
Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Achondritic melt breccia, consisting of lithic clasts (up to several cm) and mineral fragments (plagioclase, olivine), set in a fine-grained and vesicular crystallized melt. Clasts and melt are dominated by plagioclase, with smaller amounts of olivine. Point counting in a large clast revealed ~80% plagioclase and ~20% olivine). No pyroxene was found. Accessories are troilite and Ni-bearing metal.
Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Olivine Fa18.2±1.2 (Fa16.7-20.8); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 93.2; n=16. Plagioclase An97.6±0.6Or0.1±0.1 (An96.4-98.8Or0.0-0.4); n=15.
Classification: Lunar troctolitic anorthosite melt breccia, based on Fe/Mn values in olivine, high An values in plagioclase, and modal composition of clasts.
Shock stage: high
Weathering grade: moderate
Classifier: K. Metzler, IfP.
