Ancient Roman Leaping Lion/Leopard Bronze Mount, 4th to 6th Century A.D.
Motif: Leaping feline (lion or leopard) adorned with concentric circles decoration.
Dimensions: 41 mm length, 29 mm height
Weight: 12.31 g
Condition: See photos for condition, zoom in if needed.

Description:
This complete and finely cast bronze mount realistically depicts a leaping predatory feline, interpreted as a lion or a leopard.
The beast is captured in a dynamic posture with its rear legs extended and its tail raised into an elegant loop.
The entire surface of the body is meticulously adorned with a traditional decoration of engraved concentric circles mimicking the animal's coat.
The reverse preserves two original mounting rivets, one of which still retains its square fastening plate intact.
Boasting a beautiful contrasting orange-brown and dark green patina, this rare provincial artifact shows superb stylistic character.

Historical Context:
In the Late Roman and Early Byzantine military and civil spheres, decorative bronze mounts featuring zoomorphic imagery were highly popular.
Predatory felines like lions and leopards carried powerful connotations of strength, agility, and protection, making them favored motifs for belt fittings, horse harness ornaments, or chest attachments.
The stylized technique of using punched ring-and-dot or concentric circle motifs to define anatomy and fur patterns is typical of provincial metalwork during this transitional era.
Such personal or military accoutrements served as visible indicators of rank, function, and cultural alignment within the changing borders of the late empire.

Statements concerning dating, attribution, symbolic interpretation, provenance, and material identification are provided as scholarly assessments grounded in typological analysis, comparative studies with published references and museum-held parallels, and informed expert opinion.
Such assessments reflect the current state of academic understanding; however, definitive conclusions may only be established through advanced scientific examination and laboratory testing, procedures which remain beyond the scope of the platform’s standard sales process.

Prospective bidders are strongly encouraged to examine all photographs in conjunction with the stated dimensions and condition details, as high-resolution imagery may affect the perception of scale, and surface characteristics.
Every object is presented in accordance with principles of transparency, academic consistency, and good faith, and no item is knowingly catalogued or offered as a modern reproduction, copy, or imitation.
