Item Description:
Yume Uranai (夢うらなひ) / Yume-ai Enju Bukuro (夢合延寿袋) — Edo Period Woodblock-Printed Dream Oracle Book with Baku Illustrations
A rare and charming example of Edo-period popular publishing, this complete single-volume wahon (traditional Japanese bound book) is a woodblock-printed dream oracle guide entitled Yume Uranai ("Dream Divination"), subtitled Yume-ai Enju Bukuro ("Dream-Reading Longevity Pouch").
Published by the distinguished Edo publisher Izumiya Ichibee (和泉屋市兵衛), whose shop stood at Shiba Shinmeimon-mae in Edo (present-day Tokyo), the book belongs to a genre of popular illustrated miscellany that flourished during the mid-to-late Edo period.
The volume is notable for its inclusion of baku (獏) illustrations — the mythical dream-devouring beast of Chinese and Japanese folklore — making it an exceptionally rare survival within the dream-divination literature of the era.
The text is written in flowing cursive kana script (hentaigana), and the interior pages show lively woodblock-printed illustrations alongside the divination content.
The original blue paper cover (hyoshi) is intact, with the handwritten title label (daisen) affixed to the front.
This is a fascinating object for collectors of Edo-period popular culture, Japanese folklore, ukiyo-e, and antiquarian books.
