A striking Showa period full size Japanese samurai armour set, made in the style of historical warrior armour. This richly decorative set features vivid orange-red lacing, finely arranged small armour plates, large shoulder guards, a kabuto helmet, a black lacquered face mask, matching arm guards, thigh guards, shin guards, an armour box, and an assembly-type wooden display stand.
The helmet is fitted with tall kuwagata horn ornaments and a central crest reading Hachiman Daibosatsu, referring to Hachiman, the deity of war and protector of warriors. The side guards of the helmet bear the bellflower family crest, a crest famously associated with Akechi Mitsuhide.
The black lacquered iron face mask has a fierce expression with a moustache and a tiered neck guard. The cuirass is made with numerous small armour plates tightly laced with high-quality orange and reddish silk cords, creating a dense and impressive appearance. The large shoulder guards, often associated with high-ranking warriors, match the lacing of the cuirass beautifully, and their reverse cloth is decorated with a paired-crane design.
The accompanying arm guards are formed with black lacquered metal strips and chainmail. The thigh guards use fine blue and gold brocade fabric woven with phoenix and arabesque patterns, adding a refined decorative contrast to the bold armour plates. The matching shin guards complete the set. The black lacquered armour box has gold maki-e writing on the front, and the included wooden stand allows the armour to be displayed immediately.
Fair to good vintage condition overall, with signs of age and use including rubbing, small scratches, discolouration, fraying, blemishes, small lacquer chips, and patina to the metal fittings. The leather and chin cords of the helmet show notable ageing, with surface peeling to the leather and tears to the cords. The face mask has surface cracks and lacquer chips. The cuirass has many stains, and the armour box shows rubbing and dirt. Please refer to the photos for details.
