Lacquer-Painted Folding Rahleh – Papier-Mâché, Leather and Textile – Late Qajar / Early Pahlavi, c. 1900–1925
Description
An antique folding rahleh (Qur’an stand), crafted in traditional lacquered papier-mâché and richly hand-painted on both sides. The panels are decorated with figural and floral compositions executed in the lacquer tradition, framed by black lacquer borders with delicate ornamental details.
The construction displays characteristic techniques associated with lacquer work of the late Qajar and early Pahlavi periods. The body is formed from layered papier-mâché reinforced with textile material, while the folding central hinge retains its original leather covering. Visible craquelure, surface patina and age-related wear are consistent with the object’s age and traditional manufacturing methods.
According to the accompanying provenance provided by the Swedish auction house from which the piece was acquired, the rahleh was reportedly presented as a gift to the Swedish Consul, Anders Nilsson, during the mid-1920s.
A decorative and historically evocative example of Qajar lacquer craftsmanship, combining traditional painting, lacquerwork and bookbinding techniques in a functional folding form.
Dimensions:
57.5 × 37 cm (opened)
Provenance
Acquired from a Swedish auction house. Catalogued as a Qajar lacquer object and accompanied by the note that it was presented as a gift to the Swedish Consul, Anders Nilsson, during the mid-1920s.
Condition
Age-related wear and patina consistent with age and use. The photographs form an integral part of the description and condition report.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped securely.
