【Product details】
This elegant Showa-period tea caddy was created by the lacquer artist Michiba Soko (道場宗廣), born into a long-established lacquerware family in the Yamanaka Onsen region of Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture, an area celebrated for its refined Yamanaka lacquer tradition. Trained rigorously under his father, Soko became known for his highly regarded lacquer craftsmanship, particularly in tea utensils.
The tea caddy features a distinctive octagonal form finished in deep tame-nuri lacquer, displaying a rich translucent reddish-brown tone with remarkable depth. The lid is decorated with a pair of wild geese, while the sides are adorned with autumn grasses including bush clover and pampas grass rendered in delicate maki-e.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs.
The autumn grasses symbolise the beauty and transience of the seasons, while wild geese are traditionally associated with safe journeys, harmony, and the arrival of autumn in Japanese art and poetry.
The octagonal shape itself carries auspicious meaning in Japan. The number eight is associated with expanding prosperity and good fortune, and the octagon is traditionally regarded as a shape that attracts luck and positive energy from all directions.
The interior is finished in glossy black lacquer, creating a refined contrast with the warm exterior tones.
The original signed wooden box is included, bearing the title, signature, and seal of the artist.
Good to very good vintage condition. There is a very small lacquer crack on the side and minor wear. Please refer to the photos for details.
Dimensions: approx. H 7 cm W 6.5 cm D 6.1 cm
