【Πληροφορίες προϊόντος】
This refined Heisei-period flat tea caddy was created by the woodcraft and lacquer artist Hashimura Bansho. It is a tea ceremony utensil made using byakudan-nuri, a traditional lacquer technique admired for its warm, translucent depth and richly aged glow.
Byakudan-nuri is a traditional lacquer technique in which transparent lacquer is applied over gold leaf, silver leaf, or silver maki-e. As the lacquer matures over time, it becomes increasingly translucent, allowing the metallic layer beneath to appear more vividly. This gives the surface a deep, glowing quality that becomes more beautiful with age. Applying lacquer evenly over metal leaf requires great skill, and such pieces are produced by highly trained craftsmen.
The Hashimura family is said to have moved from Nara to Kyoto when the imperial capital was transferred to Heian-kyo. Thereafter, under the name Hashimura Mazaemon, the family was granted the privilege of bearing a surname and wearing swords, and for many generations they served the Imperial Court as official makers of traditional wooden utensils until the end of the Edo period. After the capital moved to Tokyo, the family continued to receive commissions from court nobles while also beginning to produce tea utensils, mainly using Akita cedar, Yoshino cedar, and Japanese cypress.
The third-generation Mazaemon in the family’s tea utensil tradition received the art name “Itto Bansho” from the head priest of Daitokuji Temple. The name means “creating countless forms with a single blade”, and from this came the name Bansho.
Hashimura Bansho was born in Kyoto in 1959 as the eldest son of the previous Bansho. He studied under his grandfather, the first-generation Bansho, and succeeded to the third-generation name in 2008. He also studied under the Japanese-style painter Yamamoto Koun, and is known for creating distinguished works that combine traditional bentwood craftsmanship with raised gofun decoration and coloured painting, preserving classical culture in a refined contemporary form.
This tea caddy has a rounded flat form with a richly textured exterior. The byakudan lacquer creates a warm amber-brown tone, allowing the gold leaf beneath to shine through with a soft, elegant brilliance, while the interior is finished in glossy black lacquer, providing a beautiful contrast. The exterior surface shows expressive carved or textured lines, giving the piece a strong tactile presence and visual depth.
