Rumiko Takahashi (b. 1957) is one of Japan’s most influential and prolific manga artists. She is known for series such as Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma ½ and Inuyasha. Her work blends humour, romance and fantasy, and has been translated into dozens of languages.
Lum is the female protagonist of Urusei Yatsura, Takahashi’s first major work, originally published in 1978. The character quickly became an icon of 1980s manga and anime, recognised for her tiger-stripe bikini and explosive personality.
During the 1990s there was a strong revival of interest in Urusei Yatsura, which led to a new wave of posters, reprints and collectors’ material.
An interesting detail is that Rumiko Takahashi had not planned for Lum to be the central protagonist. She was initially a secondary character… but readers grew so fond of her that she became the focus of the series and one of the most popular characters in the entire history of manga.
