Item Description

Title of Artwork: Japanese Takaoka Bronze Vase — Archaic Dragon Handles & Polychrome Patina

Japanese Bronze Vase with Takaoka Copperware Craft — Archaic-Style Relief and Polychrome Patina
This striking vase is a fine example of Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器), one of Japan's most celebrated metalworking traditions with over 400 years of history originating in Toyama Prefecture. Designated as a Traditional Craft by the Japanese government, Takaoka accounts for approximately 90% of Japan's total cast bronze production.

Cast in special alloy bronze (特殊合金), this piece features a bold polychrome patina in deep red, bronze, and mottled black — achieved through the traditional coloring (着色) technique unique to Takaoka craftsmen. The body is adorned with raised bands of archaic Chinese-inspired motifs: interlocking key-fret (雷文) patterns and stylized taotie mask scrollwork encircle both the neck and lower body. Two symmetrical dragon-head handles with curling tails flank the shoulder, adding sculptural dynamism to the classical silhouette.

The rounded, compressed body rises to a narrow neck and flares into a wide trumpet mouth — a form echoing ancient Chinese bronzeware, reinterpreted through Japanese craftsmanship. This is a display piece with genuine decorative presence.

Size
Height: 21 cm
Width: 15.35 cm (max diameter)

Weight: 996 g

Condition
In good overall condition consistent with age; minor surface scratches and light patina variation are present as expected for a vintage piece.

Artist Profile
This piece bears no individual artist signature but is a product of the Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) tradition, a craft originating in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, in the early 17th century. Designated as a National Traditional Craft in 1975, Takaoka represents approximately 90% of Japan's cast bronze output and is renowned for its sophisticated casting, chasing, and patination techniques passed down through generations of master craftsmen.
