Περιγραφή από τον πωλητή

Item Description:

A cast bronze two-handled flower vase (sōji hanaire, 双耳花入) bearing the workshop seal of Shōun (昇雲), a production name of the Takaoka Dōki (高岡銅器) bronze-casting tradition of Toyama Prefecture.

The base carries a gold-painted inscription identifying this piece as a presentation gift commissioned by the Meguro Hokubu-kai (目黒北部会, Meguro North District Association) from its members (yūshi ichidō, 有志一同) — reflecting the enduring tradition of commissioning quality decorative bronze vessels as civic gifts in Japan.

The ovoid body rises from a spreading foot to a pronounced shoulder, then narrows to a wide-mouth neck with an everted rim.

Flanking the shoulder are two cast ring handles, each surmounted by a finely modelled dragon or mythical beast head (ryū, 龍), with mane, horns and scales individually defined.

Encircling the shoulder at the junction of neck and body is a broad band of precisely executed raimon (雷紋, thunder-scroll meander pattern), bordered above and below by rows of raised bosses — a decorative motif drawn from ancient bronze vessel traditions and a hallmark of accomplished Takaoka casting work.

The entire surface is covered in a deep, even malachite-green patina (ryokushō, 緑青), shifting between jade-green and darker moss tones in different lights.

The patina, combined with the classical form and dragon-head handles, gives the piece a commanding decorative presence suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Artist Profile
昇雲 Shōun — Takaoka Dōki Workshop (高岡銅器)
Shōun (昇雲) is a workshop name within the Takaoka Dōki (高岡銅器) decorative bronze tradition of Toyama Prefecture — not an individual artist name. The Takaoka Dōki tradition, which originated in 1611 and accounts for over 90% of all decorative metalwork produced in Japan, is known for its mastery of casting, patination and surface decoration. The Shōun workshop produced presentation and commemorative bronze wares in the latter Shōwa and Heisei periods, of the type commonly commissioned by civic groups, companies and associations as gifts of distinction. The base inscription of this piece records its presentation by the Meguro Hokubu-kai (目黒北部会).
