While Kyoto is celebrated worldwide for its temples, gardens, and geisha districts, another treasure has quietly shaped the city’s cultural identity for centuries: sake. In this evocative work from Masao Ido’s renowned Kyoto Hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Kyoto) series, the artist turns his attention to Fushimi, one of Japan’s most historic and prestigious brewing regions.
At first glance, the composition appears understated. A traditional brewery stretches across the landscape beneath a tranquil sky, while a stone lantern glows softly in the foreground. Willow branches sway overhead, their leaves carried by a gentle breeze. Yet beneath this calm surface lies a story that spans hundreds of years—a story of water, craftsmanship, and the enduring spirit of Kyoto.
Fushimi has been one of Japan’s foremost sake-producing districts since the early Edo period. The area owes its reputation to the extraordinary quality of its underground spring water, known as Fushimizu, literally “the water of Fushimi.” Soft and pure, this water produces sake renowned for its smoothness, elegance, and refined character. Over the centuries, generations of brewers settled here, transforming the district into a thriving center of commerce and culture. Even today, many of Japan’s most respected breweries continue to operate in Fushimi, preserving techniques handed down through countless generations.
As part of the highly regarded Kyoto Hyakkei series, “The Sake Breweries of Fushimi” stands as both a beautiful landscape and a historical document. It invites the viewer into a quieter side of Kyoto—one where the scent of rice and cedar drifts through the evening air, where pure spring water becomes liquid artistry, and where centuries-old traditions continue to shape everyday life. Through Masao Ido’s refined vision, Fushimi becomes not merely a place, but a timeless symbol of Japanese craftsmanship and cultural continuity.
