Original Kalighat Patachitra by Bahar Chitrakar (2023)
Description:
An exquisite, hand-painted Kalighat-style Patachitra from West Bengal, India. This piece is a fine example of the work of Bahar Chitrakar, a highly esteemed veteran artist from the Naya village of Medinipur.
Theme & Symbolism:
• The Ritual: This painting depicts a traditional Bengali wedding. The bride and groom are shown in a stylized embrace, reflecting the sacred bond of marriage.
• The Guardian Eyes: The central figures are surrounded by a unique border of "watching eyes." In the context of a wedding, these represent the "Nazar" (the protective eye), intended to ward off bad luck and symbolize the watchful blessings of ancestors and the community.
• Kalighat Aesthetic: The painting utilizes the iconic bold, sweeping black outlines and fluid movement that define the Kalighat school.
Technical Details:
• Artist: Bahar Chitrakar (Attributed via provenance).
• Origin: Naya, Medinipur, West Bengal.
• Date of Creation: 2023.
• Dimensions: 35 cm x 27 cm.
• Medium: Hand-mixed natural pigments (vegetal and mineral) on paper.
• Condition: Excellent.
Note the vibrant, organic colors which are a hallmark of the artist's traditional method.
Provenance Note: Acquired directly from the artist's studio in Medinipur. While the piece is unsigned—consistent with many traditional folk artworks of this region—the style and execution are distinctly characteristic of Bahar Chitrakar’s senior hand.
