• Content: Complete series of high-quality facsimile engravings that reproduce with precision the chiaroscuro and the strength of Goya’s original strokes.

Folder: Presented in its original large-format case, bound.

Shows good conservation status with few signs of aging.

Extraordinary and extremely rare facsimile edition of "La Tauromaquia" by Francisco de Goya, published in 1970 under the direction and commentary of Antonio de Horna.

Exceptional Documentation Included:

The lot includes an original letter from the National Library of Spain (1970), signed by the Secretary General, expressly authorizing D. Antonio de Horna to undertake this new edition of Goya’s engravings, guaranteeing fidelity to the original plates.

This is a unique opportunity to acquire one of the shortest and most exclusive editions of "La Tauromaquia" of the 20th century. The inclusion of the Library’s official correspondence adds historical value and provenance that is immeasurable. It is an essential work for collectors of Goyaesque art, bullfighting subjects, and major facsimile editions.

“La Tauromaquia” is a series of thirty-three prints published in 1816. Eleven additional works should be added to this series. These unpublished works were not included in the first edition due to minor flaws, but they were equally well known, it is a very rare 1960's facsimile edition.
From the first years of the 19th c. Goya had the intention to dedicate a series of prints to bullfighting. He created this collection slowly, with no specific schedule, probably due to the disruption caused by the war. According to several authors, Goya’s initial intention was to illustrate some passages of the “Carta histórica sobre el origen y proceso de las corridas de toros en España” (1777), written by Nicolás Fernández de Moratín. However, the artist went beyond his original idea and completed the series with events and personal memories -specially some famous moves of the time- related to bullfighting and external to Moratín’s work.
Goya was with Pablo Picasso, Antoni Tàpies or Salvador Dalí one of the best spanish artist of the world.
