Winiama Gurunsi mask statue, Boromo region, Burkina Faso. Incl stand.
Masks with an open circular structure are rare in the artistic corpus of the Burkina Faso region. This mask is unusual, not only because of its open ring, its deep cylindrical mouth with thin walls adorned without carved teeth, its round, bulging eyes, its geometric ears, and, at the apex of the circle, a female spirit figure extending her palms forward at the level of the navel. It also features triangular, linear, and semi-circular ornaments on the ring and on the face of the mask, as well as a horn between the ring and the head below the spirit figure, resembling a Kalao bird's beak. This horn has been restored locally using nails and cowhide and is located above the face, with patches of white paint in the carved ornaments, and traces of wear, cracks, and abrasions.
Lit.: Christopher D. Roy and Thomas G.B. Wheelock: "The Land Of The Flying Masks, Art and Culture in Burkina Faso, The Thomas G.B. Wheelock Collection, 2006: 399, cat. 84) Prestel.
