Περιγραφή από τον πωλητή
Important Maro Barkcloth (Tapa) – Babrongko Village, Lake Sentani, West Papua – 1960s
Rare and authentic Maro barkcloth from Babrongko Village on Lake Sentani, West Papua. Collected during the 1960s, this hand-made ceremonial textile was produced from beaten tree bark and painted with traditional pigments. Maro cloths are among the most distinctive artistic expressions of the Sentani people and are closely connected with clan identity, ancestral traditions, mythology and ritual life.
The painted imagery depicts stylized ancestral beings and spirit figures characteristic of the Lake Sentani artistic tradition. Such motifs served not merely as decoration but as visual expressions of stories, spiritual beliefs and clan history.
Examples of Maro barkcloth are preserved in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where they are recognized as important works of Sentani material culture.
