【Product details】
This exceptionally elegant two-tier jewellery box was created using the traditional techniques of Wajima lacquerware, one of Japan’s most highly regarded lacquer crafts.
Japanese kerria flowers, known in Japan as yamabuki, are depicted across the deep black natural lacquer surface in refined gold and bronze-toned maki-e. Small pieces of mother-of-pearl (raden) inlay are scattered around the floral design, adding delicate iridescent highlights resembling drifting petals or drops of morning dew. The extremely fine lines and detailed decoration demonstrate the precision and skill of an experienced lacquer artist.
Wajima lacquerware is renowned for its exceptional strength and durability. A carefully prepared foundation is covered with multiple layers of natural lacquer through a highly demanding process involving approximately 23 stages and more than 124 individual steps. Considerable time, patience, and technical skill are required to achieve its combination of durability, elegance, and refined beauty. The craftsmanship can be seen throughout this piece, from the smooth lacquer surface to the finely executed maki-e decoration.
The interior is lined with a rich royal-blue velvet-like material. The upper removable tray is fitted with padded ring holders, while the lower compartment provides additional storage for jewellery and other small valuables.
The work was made by the Wajima lacquer artist Shu Kawahara and produced by Taigado, a long-established workshop known for high-quality artistic Wajima lacquerware.
Shu Kawahara is a lacquer artist from Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture. After graduating from the Ishikawa Prefectural Wajima Lacquer Arts Training Institute, he studied under Inami Tadashi, an important lacquer artist who served as a director of the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition, known as Nitten. Kawahara received the Contemporary Craft Award at the Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition and was later appointed a member with exemption from preliminary judging. His works have also been selected for Nitten and the Ishikawa Prefectural Art Exhibition, reflecting both his technical ability and contemporary artistic sense.
The original signed paulownia wood box is included. The underside bears the artist’s inscription and red seal. Also included are the artist’s career document and the original turmeric-coloured storage cloth bearing the Taigado mark.
Very good vintage condition with minimal wear. The lid has a very slight warp. Please refer to the photos for details.
