【Product details】
A Showa-period wall plaque depicting the serene face of Maitreya Bodhisattva, modelled after the celebrated National Treasure statue preserved at Koryuji Temple in Kyoto. The gentle expression and distinctive archaic smile of the original sculpture are carefully reproduced.
Although it resembles carved wood, the plaque is made using the traditional kanshitsu dry lacquer technique, in which layers of hemp cloth are built up over a mould with lacquer or adhesive. The hollow reverse clearly shows the woven texture of the cloth beneath the dark surface.
An old paper label on the reverse bears a red seal and the handwritten inscription “Koryuji Maitreya Bodhisattva Statue” (広隆寺 弥勒菩薩像). A black cord is attached for wall display.
Fair to good vintage condition. There is rubbing, surface wear, loss of lacquer and pigment, scratches, age-related dirt and staining, together with several small chips and cracks, mainly around the edges. Please refer to the photos for details.
※Please be sure to read the【Important Notes】section below before purchasing.
Dimensions: approx. H 37.2 cm W 19.5 cm D 14.5 cm
