Pectoral pendant – Lotuko / Latuka – South Sudan – Copper-alloy – First half of the 20th century
Details
Origin: Lotuko / Latuka people
Country: South Sudan
Region: Torit area
Material: Copper alloy
Dimensions: 15 x 13 cm
Period: First half of the 20th century
Provenance: Collected in situ by the present owner
Description
A fine old pectoral pendant from the Lotuko (also spelled Latuka, Latuko, Lotuxo) of present-day South Sudan.
Field and museum documentation confirms that the Lotuko/Latuka of the Torit region wore metal body ornaments, including neck ornaments associated with ceremonial dress and personal display. British Museum records also document Latuka field collections made around Torit.
This example is especially striking for its bold, shield-like outline. Formed from hammered copper alloy, it is articulated by a central vertical ridge and bordered on both sides by evenly spaced repoussé bosses. The composition is simple but highly effective, giving the piece a strong graphic presence and a clear sense of symmetry. The suspension loop at the top confirms its function as a worn ornament rather than a purely decorative plate.
The surface has developed a beautiful old glossy patina, with nuanced brown and green tones consistent with age and use. Beyond its ethnographic interest, the pendant stands out as a refined abstract form, combining balance, scale, and material presence.
A very attractive South Sudanese ornament, appreciated for its field provenance, its strong sculptural clarity, and its honest age.
Condition
Wear, abrasions, oxidation traces, and surface irregularities consistent with age and use. Good overall condition. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The pendant only.
No stand included.
