Περιγραφή από τον πωλητή
This Marteau Gon, a Baule hammer from the Daoukro region in central Ivory Coast, combines sculptural mastery with ceremonial function. Such elaborately crafted hammers or insignia were used in connection with religious authorities, dignitaries, and ritual acts, serving as visible symbols of social legitimacy and spiritual power. The Baule people often combined practical objects with complex iconographic programs expressing notions of fertility, ancestor veneration, and social order. Incl stand.
The object is crowned by a seated female figure, her gaze focused as she holds a child in her lap. This depiction alludes to motherhood, nurturing, and the transmission of life as central values within Baule society. The raffia cord around her neck reinforces the figure's ceremonial character. The stool on which she sits also forms the richly ornamented handle of the object. Its design, featuring a crocodile on one side and a spiral on the other, combines zoological and abstract symbolism. While the crocodile is often associated with strength, adaptability, and power, the spiral can symbolize continuity and cyclical renewal.
Below the female figure appears a standing male figure, seemingly supporting the upper part. With slightly bent knees, a serene smile, and hands placed on his stomach, he embodies stability and responsibility. The glossy patina and slight signs of wear attest to prolonged use, while the overall good state of preservation reflects the object's high regard for it.
