Antique Japanese Blue & White Porcelain Octagonal Plate — Imari Ware, Edo to Meiji Period

This impressive octagonal plate is a fine example of Japanese blue and white (sometsuke) porcelain in the Imari tradition, most likely produced during the late Edo to early Meiji period (circa 19th century). The generous size and refined execution speak to the skill of experienced kiln workers in the Arita / Imari region of Hizen Province (present-day Saga Prefecture), which was the center of Japanese porcelain production for centuries.

The face of the plate presents a sweeping landscape scene (sansui-zu) rendered in vivid cobalt blue underglaze. The composition unfolds across an expansive white ground: in the foreground, a dramatic cliff formation rises from the water's edge, crowned by a pavilion sheltering a solitary figure — the archetypal scholar-recluse of East Asian painting tradition. Tall pines and deciduous trees stretch upward in exquisite detail, their branches and needles rendered with confident, practiced brushwork. Across the calm water, a cluster of traditional buildings nestles among cypresses on the far shore. Above, a panoramic range of misty mountains recedes into the distance, with two cranes soaring in the open sky — symbols of longevity and good fortune. The white ground is used masterfully to suggest the expanse of water and atmosphere, a hallmark of the sansui style.

The wide border is decorated with a dense, interlocking geometric fretwork (kikko and swastika-variant patterns), adding a formal framing that complements the naturalistic scene within. The outer rim carries a delicate chain-link scroll. The rim wall shows additional geometric banding on both inner and outer sides.

The unglazed base exhibits the flat, broad foot typical of Imari export-style large plates, with age-related patina consistent with authentic antique pieces.

This plate would have been used as a display or serving piece for formal occasions. Its generous dimensions, confident brushwork, and classical iconography make it a highly desirable acquisition for collectors of Japanese ceramics and East Asian decorative arts.

Condition

The plate is in good overall condition consistent with its age, displaying attractive natural patina on the reverse. Several faint hairline scratches are visible in the central white ground of the face when viewed under close inspection — these appear to be surface-level marks rather than cracks through the body, and do not affect the structural integrity of the piece. Age-related wear, minor spotting, and time-worn patina are present on the unglazed base. No chips or restorations noted.

Artist Profile

Unknown Japanese Artisan / Imari Ware Kiln, Hizen Province (Arita / Imari region)

This plate was produced by skilled craftspeople working within the established kiln tradition of the Hizen / Arita region, the heartland of Japanese porcelain production since the early 17th century. Imari ware takes its name from the port of Imari, through which vast quantities of Arita porcelain were shipped domestically and internationally. The blue and white landscape style seen on this plate draws from both Chinese Ming-dynasty prototypes and distinctly Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, blending continental tradition with local artistic vision. Individual kiln masters or painters of anonymous pieces from this period remain unrecorded by name.
