Imperial Russian Silver Cigarette Case (84 Zolotnik), Moscow, after 1908
A beautifully crafted Russian silver cigarette case made in 84 zolotnik silver (.875) and decorated with a richly detailed repoussé forest scene inspired by the famous painting “Morning in a Pine Forest” by Ivan Shishkin.
The lid shows multiple bears among tall pine trees, fallen logs, and forest undergrowth — a theme that became iconic in Russian art and was frequently adapted by Moscow silversmiths in the early 20th century.
The case retains its original cigarette strap and closes with a firm clasp.
The reverse side bears a personal dedication in Cyrillic, dated 25 June 1934, indicating it was given as a gift during the interwar period.
“In memory, to dear Philip, from Samuil, 25 June 1934”
На память
dорогому Филиппу
от Самуила
25/VI–1934
The engraved dedication includes a Hebrew blessing formula meaning ‘as a remembrance’, a traditional phrase used in Jewish gift inscriptions of the period.
Hallmarks:
• 84 zolotnik silver standard
• Second kokoshnik mark (1908–1926), head facing left
• Assay district mark Δ (Delta) — Moscow
• Maker’s mark “АИП” (cyrillic) for Alexander Piscaryev - a Moscow silversmith active 1908 - 1913
Condition:
Good antique condition with age‑appropriate wear.
Crisp repoussé scenes on both sides.
Interior strap still present.
Hinges and clasp function properly.
