Marcus Eek (born 1968 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a contemporary Swedish painter known for his expressive, gestural works that balance abstraction and figuration. After graduating from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 1997, he established himself as one of the notable voices in contemporary Scandinavian painting. Although Swedish by birth, he has lived and worked in Berlin for many years, maintaining an active presence in both the German and Nordic art scenes.
Eek's paintings are characterized by energetic brushwork, rich textures, and vibrant color palettes. His compositions often suggest landscapes, flowers, animals, or human figures, yet they never become fully representational. Instead, his work focuses on the emotional and physical act of painting itself, allowing viewers to interpret the imagery freely. Over the years, his practice has evolved toward greater abstraction while retaining the expressive intensity that defines his style.
He has exhibited extensively throughout Scandinavia and Germany, with solo exhibitions at respected galleries including Helsinki Contemporary in Finland and Galleri Charlotte Lund in Stockholm. In addition to his own artistic practice, Eek has contributed to the contemporary art community as a co-curator of the Berlin-based exhibition project Black Market, supporting emerging artists and experimental contemporary art.
