Artist: Toyoshi Yamada (Koyo Kiln) — Kutani ware, Certified Master of Traditional Crafts (Dento Kogeishi)
Title: Kutani Flower Vase (Hana-ire) — Vivid Green Glaze with Gold Leaf and Hand-Painted Cranes, Signed
This is a magnificent Kutani ware flower vase by the acclaimed Japanese ceramic artist Toyoshi Yamada of the Koyo kiln. A rounded, full-bodied form is glazed in a brilliant, jewel-like green that melts into deep brown, overlaid with radiant gold leaf, and painted with a group of white cranes. It is signed by the artist.
About the Artist — Toyoshi Yamada
Toyoshi Yamada is a certified Master of Traditional Crafts (Dento Kogeishi) of Kutani ware and a member of the Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Association (Nikkokai). He is celebrated for a signature style that fuses precious metal leaf — gold, silver, and platinum — with beautiful gradations of colored glaze. His mastery of glaze gradation invites comparison with the work of the Living National Treasure Tokuda Yasokichi III, and his pieces are prized as expressions of everything that makes Kutani ware so admired: rich color, luster, and painterly brilliance.
The Gold and Glaze
The defining beauty of this vase is the interplay of luminous green glaze and gold. The glaze glows with the freshness of ripe fruit, shifting from vivid green to warm brown in a gradation of great depth, while gold leaf is laid across the surface so that the vase seems to catch and hold the light from every angle. Against this shimmering ground, a flock of white cranes is finely painted, their forms standing out with elegant clarity. The result is opulent, radiant, and unmistakably luxurious.
The Crane Motif
The crane (tsuru) is one of the most auspicious of all Japanese symbols, representing longevity, good fortune, and fidelity — it is said in Japan to live a thousand years. A vase adorned with cranes is therefore considered especially celebratory, making this piece both a work of art and an auspicious object well suited to important occasions and gifts.
Form & Appeal
As a hana-ire (flower vase), the generous rounded form is well suited to seasonal arrangements, a single branch, or purely decorative display in an entrance, living room, or tokonoma alcove. It will appeal to collectors of Kutani ware, admirers of gold-decorated Japanese ceramics, and anyone seeking a luxurious, auspicious centerpiece or gift.
