Description
A fine Turkana storage container, known as eburi, from Kenya.
Containers of this type belong to the pastoral material culture of the Turkana and were used for the storage of fat. They are both practical and highly personal objects, often preserved over long periods and repaired or maintained when necessary.
This example is especially appealing for its compact ovoid form and its warm orange-brown patina. The body has a strong, balanced shape, with small lateral projections allowing the passage of a leather tie.
The surface is remarkable for its pyrograved decoration. Long vertical panels of finely incised geometric motifs run down the body, creating a refined rhythm and giving the object a much richer visual presence than many more rustic examples of the type.
The leather lid is preserved, as well as a leather tie around the body. These elements add texture and reinforce the functional character of the piece. The surface shows a greasy old usage patina, consistent with its original use for storing fat.
A very attractive Turkana eburi, appreciated for its elegant ovoid form, warm orange patina, preserved leather elements and remarkable pyrograved decoration.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, marks, abrasions, small losses and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
Leather lid and leather tie preserved.
Beautiful greasy old usage patina.
