In this drawing, the surrounding landscape has been deliberately removed, leaving only the leopard and the supporting branch against a white background. This reduction shifts the focus to the relationship between the animal and the branch, drawing attention to balance, form, and the interplay of weight and support.
The branch serves not merely as a setting, but as an essential compositional element. Together with the leopard's relaxed posture, it creates a sense of equilibrium, while the absence of environmental details invites the viewer to focus on the drawing's subtle tonal transitions, textures, and carefully observed details.
ARTIST
Schu (b. 1976, Germany) is a contemporary figurative artist whose work centres on observational pencil drawing of wild animals. His practice is distinguished by compositional reduction, the deliberate removal of background elements to focus on the relationship between the animal, form, and space. Rather than describing a specific environment, the drawings seek to create a direct encounter with the subject itself.
Schu studied graphic design at the University of Applied Sciences Trier (Germany), sculpture and design at the University of Kansas (USA), and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków.
His works are held in private collections in Europe and internationally.
