A distinctive vintage ELM “J・I・M S-808” manual pencil sharpener, manufactured in Japan and believed to date from around the 1970s Showa era.

With its cylindrical body, vivid yellow and orange color combination, and playful futuristic graphics, this pencil sharpener captures the optimistic Space Age and Japanese retro-industrial aesthetic of the 1970s. It is not only a piece of vintage stationery, but also an attractive decorative object for collectors of Japanese design, Mid-Century Modern interiors, and Showa-era products.

The front is printed with the characteristic “J・I・M S-808” logo together with an English message referring to “tomorrow” and “the universe,” giving the piece a charming retro-futuristic character.

The sharpener incorporates ELM's robust mechanical construction. It features a manual crank handle with chrome-plated metal components, a spiral cutting mechanism, and two push-button components on the top associated with the pencil-holding mechanism. The shaving receptacle is removed from the lower section of the body rather than through a conventional small front drawer.

Of particular interest is the surviving original Japanese instruction sticker reading 「クズ受けは下から引き出します」, meaning that the shaving receptacle is pulled out from below. Markings including “JAPAN,” “S-1,” and “OPEN” can also be seen around the crank mechanism, linking the construction to ELM's S-1 platform.

The bright period color scheme, original Japanese labeling, mechanical details, and unusual cylindrical form make this a particularly appealing example of vintage Japanese stationery and industrial design.

The item shows signs of age and previous use, including scratches, marks, minor discoloration and wear, particularly to the chrome-plated crank area and exterior surfaces. These traces are consistent with a vintage utilitarian object and contribute to its authentic Showa-era character. ELM is a Japanese stationery manufacturer with roots in metal stationery production dating back to the Showa period. The company became particularly associated with durable mechanical pencil sharpeners, combining practical engineering with distinctive product design.

The S-1-based construction seen in this example reflects the robust mechanical approach for which Japanese desktop stationery of the period became known. The colorful “J・I・M S-808” treatment gives the otherwise functional mechanism a distinctly playful, Space Age character.

YuDesign normally uses Japan Post for delivery, but depending on the destination country and international postal conditions, we may use Japan Post, Japan Post UGX, DHL, or Yamato Transport (UPS).

Since July 24, 2026, Japan Post has temporarily suspended acceptance of some IOSS shipments, so alternative delivery services such as Japan Post UGX or Yamato Transport (UPS) may be used when necessary.

Therefore, depending on the destination country, shipping costs may be set slightly higher than usual in order to maintain reliable delivery. Thank you for your understanding.

The usual estimated delivery time is approximately 1–2 weeks, although this may vary depending on customs clearance and local delivery conditions.

Any import duties, VAT, customs clearance fees, etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.

The item will be carefully packed to ensure safe delivery. In consideration of environmental protection, recycled cardboard boxes and reused packing materials may be used.

Where safety can be ensured, lightweight packaging may also be used to reduce shipping costs.

Due to the impact on international mail services in the Middle East, Japan Post shipments to Cyprus are currently suspended. Therefore, shipments to Cyprus will be made only by DHL or Yamato Transport (UPS).
