Αυτό το επιμελώς σκαλισμένο κέδρο-ξύλινο μαξιλάρι-κεφαλής φαρμακείου προέρχεται από την περιοχή Γιανγκόου-Μπόικεν στις βουνς του Πρίγκιπα Αλεξάντερ, επαρχία Ανατολικού Σεπίκ, Παπούα Νέα Γουινέα.
Within the traditional spiritual context of the Sepik region, figurative headrests were more than practical supports for sleeping. The carved ancestral, spiritual and totemic beings were believed to protect the sleeper during a particularly vulnerable state, guarding against malevolent spirits and harmful influences and thereby promoting health and well-being.
The headrest features two crouching anthropomorphic figures, one positioned at either end, accompanied by stylized animal-like creatures, possibly monitor lizards. The underside of the central support is additionally decorated with two symmetrically arranged zoomorphic motifs. Together, these figures create a complex sculptural composition combining the functional upper platform with protective ancestral and totemic imagery.
The deeply worn and smoothed upper surface, together with the rich brown-grey patina, indicates prolonged handling and traditional use.
CONDITION:
Good overall condition considering its age and traditional use. The object shows extensive surface wear, minor losses and an old crack through one of the lower carved supports. One of the anthropomorphic figures also has a break with partial loss to the carved section along its back, with exposed wood fibres. Please examine the detailed photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition report.
