Vintage Chokwe-Style Carved Wooden Mask – Democratic Republic of the Congo / Angola – Second Half of the 20th Century
A finely carved wooden mask produced in the Chokwe style, inspired by the traditional artistic heritage of the Chokwe people of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The mask features the elegant elongated facial form, finely incised geometric scarification, carefully carved coiffure, and decorative fibre fringe commonly associated with Chokwe artistic traditions. The contrasting dark patina and light engraved decoration create an attractive visual balance, making the piece particularly suited for display.
Provenance
Purchased as part of a private collection and subsequently examined by a specialist during the Catawiki review process, who identified it as:
"A Congo Chokwe mask made during the second part of the 20th century, as a decoration."
Accordingly, the mask is offered as a vintage decorative carving in the Chokwe style, rather than as an early ceremonial example.
Dimensions
Height: approximately 35.6 cm
Width: approximately 15.2 cm
Depth: approximately 10.2 cm
Weight
Approximately 1.1–1.3 kg
Condition
Good vintage condition with surface wear, minor abrasions, and age-related imperfections consistent with its age and use as a decorative carved wooden object. The fibre fringe remains largely intact and contributes to the character of the piece.
An attractive example of late twentieth-century African decorative carving, ideal for collectors of African art, ethnographic-style sculpture, interior decoration, or vintage tribal-inspired objects.
