【Product details】

A striking pair of large creative kokeshi dolls by Koson Sato (佐藤香村, 1899–1988), a creative kokeshi artist known for his distinctive wood-carving technique and lyrical painted decoration. His works often combine the natural warmth of wood with expressive hand-carved textures and delicate brushwork inspired by Japanese painting.

This pair features zodiac-inspired motifs. The girl doll is decorated with a dynamic rooster motif, painted in bold black, red and white tones, and has a red hair ornament on the head. The base bears the artist’s signature and seal, together with an inscription indicating Showa 55, corresponding to 1980.

The boy doll is decorated with a charming dog motif and white flowers, painted in a softer and more rustic style. The head has a small topknot-like ornament. The base bears the artist’s signature and seal, together with inscriptions indicating Showa 56, corresponding to 1981.

Both dolls have cylindrical wooden bodies with expressive carved surface texture, making good use of the natural grain of the wood. Their large scale gives them a strong decorative presence, while the rooster and dog designs add a warm and playful character.

Fair to good vintage condition. There are age-related scratches, scuffs, small marks, stains, dirt and minor blemishes to the wooden and painted surfaces. The girl doll has small paint losses and scratches on the red hair ornament, and a very fine hairline crack can be seen on the black-painted area at the back of the head. There is no major splitting, and the dolls retain the warm character of vintage wooden kokeshi. Please refer to the photos for details.
