Born in 1881 in Montfort-sur-Risle, René Sautin belongs to that generation of Norman painters who made their homeland a true laboratory of light and modernity. Trained at the Beaux-Arts of Rouen in Philippe Zacharie’s studio, then in Paris with Gabriel Ferrier, he received early encouragement from Albert Lebourg, a fellow countryman and major figure of Norman Impressionism.

Settled from 1911 in Les Andelys, Sautin finds on the banks of the Seine his most intimate source of inspiration: Château-Gaillard, the quays of Petit-Andely, barges gliding on the water… So many motifs that he revisits tirelessly, with a vibrant sensitivity and a singular expressive force. He then frequents the artists Pissarro, Signac, Luce, Derain or Lebasque, who come to paint in the region — a bustling artistic circle that nourishes his stylistic evolution.

Around 1923, Sautin abandons the Impressionist brushwork to assert a calm and reasoned Fauvism, made of bold colors, generous pigment, and definitive strokes. “To paint is to spread out the paste,” he said, claiming a powerful, sensuous, deeply incarnate painting. This stylistic maturity, reached already in the 1920s, fully blossomed in the 1950s, when his work grows in intensity and monumentality.

A proud, sensitive artist, sometimes misunderstood in his time, René Sautin leaves today a body of work with great coherence, where Normandy appears transfigured by color and emotion. His landscapes, of rare strength, bear witness to a deeply personal gaze — a gaze that continues to move collectors and art lovers.
