Το βιβλίο αποτυπώνει τη δίκη του Φρανσουά Ασίγλ Μπεζέν, κατηγορούμενου ότι παρέδωσε τη Μεζ στην Πρωσσική στρατιά τον Οκτώβριο του 1870. Στο τέλος της δίκης ο Μπεζάν κηρύχθηκε ένοχος και καταδικάστηκε σε theta· η ποινή του μετατράπηκε αργότερα σε είκοσι χρόνια κράτησης από τον Πατρικ Ντε Μακ Μαόν.
