The Alden for Brooks Brothers Shell Cordovan Tassel Loafer is a masterpiece of American shoemaking. Its roots trace back to an era when the standards for traditional men's footwear were being redefined on the East Coast. While the Alden manufactory invented the modern tassel loafer as early as 1950, the prestigious house of Brooks Brothers approached the New England shoemakers in 1957 to commission the original design for an exclusive edition. The goal at the time was to create a design that honored their shared aesthetic language while setting itself apart from the regular assortment through a discreet individuality. Since the decades-long partnership between these two traditional houses has now ended, this special commissioned specification, according to which the pair presented here was also crafted, carries a profound historical significance today.
Crafted on the elegant Aberdeen last, the shoe reveals its most striking structural distinguishing feature upon closer inspection. The rear side area of the quarters features the so-called foxing, an elaborate and raised decorative stitching in the shape of an inverted L, which was strictly reserved for Brooks Brothers editions for a long time. This artisanal finesse is complemented by the use of the finest Horween Shell Cordovan. The equine leather of this particular pair is characterized by an exceptionally deep, almost eggplant-colored undertone of Color 8, which unfolds its full chromatic complexity in the play of light. It is a quiet, masterful testament to a bygone era of American shoemaking, the artisanal depth of which could hardly be recreated in this form today.
