Model History:

Introduced at the beginning of the 1960s, the Seiko Champion was an elegant hand-wound range positioned as a dependable and accessible mechanical watch for everyday use. Its clean dial layouts, slim cases and applied hour markers reflect the restrained Japanese dress-watch design of the period. The Champion family later developed into several variations, including calendar-equipped and sportier models.

This reference J14090 dates from April 1961 and represents one of the earlier Champion models. Its silver dial features applied faceted hour markers and the characteristic cursive “Seiko Champion” and “Diashock 17 Jewels” inscriptions. Diashock was Seiko’s proprietary shock-protection system, designed to protect the movement’s delicate balance staff from everyday impacts.

Condition:

The watch is in nice vintage condition with visible signs of age and previous use. The stainless steel case displays surface scratches and small marks, particularly on the case back, consistent with a watch from 1961.

The silver dial is well preserved, showing only minimal signs of ageing. The applied hour markers, hands and printed inscriptions remain well preserved and clearly legible. The newly fitted crystal is clean and free from scratches, while the new black leather strap complements the watch’s classic dress-watch appearance.
