Model History:

The Seikomatic range represented an important part of Seiko’s higher-quality automatic watch production during the early 1960s. The Slimdate models combined a relatively thin profile with a practical date display and refined dress-watch styling, making them suitable for both professional and formal wear.

Produced in October 1964, this Seikomatic Slimdate is powered by Seiko’s calibre 840. Developed by the Suwa division, this 30-jewel automatic movement operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and was designed specifically for slim date-equipped watches. Its decorative rotor, fine regulator and comparatively elaborate winding system reflect the high standard of Seiko’s better mechanical movements of the period.

Reference 840990 features an elegant sunburst dial, applied gold-tone markers and hands, a framed date window and a finely fluted chapter ring. The gold-plated case gives the watch a distinctly formal mid-century appearance.

Condition:

The watch is in good vintage condition with noticeable signs of age and previous use. The gold plating displays scratches, marks and considerable wear, particularly on the tips and edges of the lugs, along the case sides and around the outer areas of the case back. Several areas of the underlying base metal are visible.

The dial remains attractive but shows age-related spotting, small marks and discolouration, most visibly on the left side and around the date window. The hands and applied hour markers also display some surface ageing and wear. The printed inscriptions remain clear and legible, while the fluted chapter ring is well preserved.

A new, scratch-free crystal and a new black leather strap have been fitted. The automatic Seiko calibre 840 movement has been fully serviced and is functioning correctly. The watch is sold with a 3-month functionality guarantee.
