Περιγραφή από τον πωλητή
Statue Senufo, Korhogo Region, Côte d'Ivoire, incl stand.
This carved wooden seated figure originates from the Senufo region around Korhogo in northern Côte d'Ivoire and can be attributed to the Central Korhogo style. This regional style is distinguished by its balanced composition, compact volumes, and a calm, strictly frontal conception of the human figure. Characteristic features include the elongated cylindrical neck, harmonious proportions, and a restrained modelling that reduces forms to their essential elements, lending the sculpture a remarkable sense of monumentality.
Seated upright on a low stool, the figure conveys a dignified and contemplative presence. The slightly upturned head, with almond-shaped, half-closed eyes, a slender nose, and a finely carved mouth, expresses serenity and inner composure. The robustly modelled torso, with its gently protruding abdomen, transitions into short, bent legs. The arms rest close to the body, while the hands are placed naturally upon the thighs. A multi-strand belt encircles the waist, and the high cap-like coiffure together with the prominently carved ears provide subtle formal accents.
The dark brown to black lustrous patina displays evident signs of age and handling, suggesting prolonged ritual use. Through its restrained formal vocabulary, harmonious plasticity, and quiet authority, the sculpture exemplifies the distinctive qualities of Senufo carving from the Central Korhogo region.
