Period: Late Showa era (1970–1989)

This large flower jar is handcrafted by Kutani ware artist Shōbun. It is covered with creamy-white crackle glaze featuring fine natural craquelure, creating a mellow antique texture. Decorated using traditional Kutani overglaze enamel technique with gold shading, it is a classic Japanese decorative flower vessel with a bird-and-flower motif.

Kutani ware originates from Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, renowned for vivid polychrome painting and abundant gilded ornamentation. Peacock and peony is one of the most iconic auspicious themes for Kutani ceramics. Shōbun inherited the traditional Kutani bird-and-flower painting style and specialised in large decorative jars and vases.

The body is fully decorated with a panoramic scene featuring pine trees, peonies and a pair of peacocks. The male peacock stands upright with intricately layered tail feathers, while the female peacock rests nearby.

Pine rocks and blooming peonies enrich the composition. Fine realistic brushwork details feathers, leaves and pine needles with rich saturated colours, complemented by scattered gold wash on the background, creating a rich and magnificent scene. The rim is adorned with lotus petal patterns, and the lower body is encircled by gilded geometric diamond motifs. The upper and lower decorations echo each other. The jar features a full, rounded and steady silhouette.

A red hand-painted mark “Kutani Shōbun” (九谷 祥文) can be found on the base. It comes with its original paulownia tomobako, inscribed with the title and artist’s name, stamped with the maker’s seal.

Within Japanese folk culture, peacocks symbolise nobility and good prospects; peonies stand for wealth and prosperity, and pine trees represent longevity. This combination forms a timeless auspicious design. Ideal for interior display and flower arrangement.

Due to age, the vase bears natural oxidation marks. The original paulownia tomobako has accumulated dust and shows signs of ageing. Overall good condition considering its age.
