Árpád Dynasty – Kinga Stephen II (1116–1131) Ασημένιο δηνάριο (ÉH 37) σε κατάσταση XF
Premium Medieval Lot: Kingdom of Hungary, Stephen II (1116–1131) Silver Denar. Reference: ÉH 37. Outstanding XF (Extremely Fine) condition. Iconic "Three Crosses on Golgotha" imagery.
This beautifully preserved 12th-century silver denar transports us to a highly turbulent era of Árpád-dynasty Hungary, during the reign of King Stephen II. This piece of early medieval Hungarian coinage is not merely currency; it is a perfect visual representation of the contemporary Christian state ideology.
Historical and Numismatic Significance
Iconography (Three Crosses on Golgotha): The most important and visually striking element of this coin is the symbolism depicting the biblical Mount Golgotha and the three crosses. This motif boldly proclaimed the divine right of the Árpád kings and the deep Christian commitment of the Kingdom of Hungary.
Outstanding Condition (XF): Thin 12th-century silver denars are notoriously found worn, chipped, or weakly struck. This particular specimen has survived in an exceptional XF (Extremely Fine) condition. The lines of the crosses and the contours of the coin are sharp, drastically increasing its numismatic value and eye appeal.
Historical Context: The era of Stephen II was defined by constant warfare (against Byzantium, Venice, and Bohemia). These silver coins fueled the economy of a kingdom in a perpetual state of military mobilization.
Curator's Note
The ÉH 37 type is a true classical medieval issue. However, finding it in this superior (XF) state of preservation is exceedingly rare on the open market. Due to the sharpness of the Golgotha motif, it serves as a perfect centerpiece for any advanced collection focusing on the Hungarian Middle Ages or European Christian symbolism.
