Vintage Kremona-style Bulgarian Parlor Guitar – circa 1920s–1930s

Offered for auction is a beautiful and unusual vintage 6-string parlor acoustic guitar, believed to be an early Bulgarian instrument and attributed to the Kremona tradition of Kazanlak, Bulgaria.

The guitar displays many characteristics associated with early European guitar making of the first half of the 20th century, when Bulgarian makers were strongly influenced by the German Markneukirchen school.

The instrument has a compact traditional parlor-shaped body, slotted headstock with 3+3 open tuning machines, dark fingerboard and a particularly attractive carved black moustache-style bridge with six white bridge pins.

The soundboard has a fine, straight grain and a warm amber-brown finish that has developed an attractive natural patina with age. The back is particularly striking, displaying beautiful contrasting natural wood figuring.

The simple soundhole decoration, traditional construction and elegant proportions give the instrument the distinctive appearance of an early European parlor guitar.

Important attribution note:
No clearly readable maker's label or serial number has been identified. Therefore, although the instrument is believed to be associated with early Bulgarian/Kremona guitar making, the attribution to Kremona and the dating to circa 1920s–1930s should be regarded as approximate and are not guaranteed.
