Gan Bronze Figures
Banfora region, southwestern Burkina Faso
Copper alloy, lost-wax casting
The two slender figures are rendered in a radically elongated style that borders on the linear. Narrow legs, rod-like arms, and tubular bodies support small, elongated heads with only suggested facial features. Raised rings articulate the arms, hips, and joints, adding a rhythmic accent to the fragile silhouettes. The female figure is distinguished by breasts, while the male figure displays a beard and genitals. The irregular, earth-toned oxidized surface retains traces of the casting process, lending the bodies an archaic materiality. Each figure was created as a unique casting using the lost-wax method; consequently, even works conceived as pairs exhibit individual variations.
The Gan (Kaaba/Kaa) people inhabit southwestern Burkina Faso, in the broader Banfora area near the borders with Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. Metal art holds a prominent place in their material culture; Gan bronzes include jewelry, amulets, animal representations, figures, and objects serving ritual or divinatory functions. Unlike many neighboring societies, the Gan also possess a historically established institution of kingship that persists to this day.
Small anthropomorphic bronzes may be associated with spiritual beings, protective concepts, and historical figures. Through its extreme verticality, the human body here appears distilled into line, rhythm, and presence.
