Description
A small but very attractive copper-alloy ankle currency of the type known in the Mongo cultural area as konga or likonga.
These heavy metal ornaments were worn as ankle rings or leg bands and also functioned as objects of value, prestige and exchange. They belong to the wider tradition of Central African metal currencies, where copper-alloy objects could serve both as adornment and as stored wealth.
This example has a strong architectural form, with a wide open structure and a series of raised horizontal ribs. The object is compact but visually powerful, with a deep dark brown patina, subtle reddish tones and areas of green oxidation that give great depth to the surface.
A fine small ethnographic metal currency, notable for its sculptural profile, age patina and dense material presence.
Condition
Wear, oxidation, small casting irregularities, surface deposits and age-related marks throughout. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The ankle currency only. Stand not included.
