Period: Early to mid-20th century
Provenance: Private collection

Description
A beautiful Ethiopian wooden coffee ceremony table, known as a rekebot, of unusually elongated form.
In Ethiopia, such small tables were traditionally used during the coffee ceremony, one of the most important domestic and social rituals of the region. They served to present cups and coffee utensils, and could also function as small prestige objects within the household.
This example is especially attractive for its long architectural form and its finely incised geometric decoration. The front is divided into a series of vertical panels filled with cross-hatching, parallel lines and triangular motifs, creating a strong graphic rhythm. The raised border around the top and the dark, worn surface give the object a very beautiful old presence.
A side compartment is built into the body of the table, as on some traditional examples, allowing small objects to be stored inside. The handle area appears incomplete, probably missing an original leather strap or small carrying element.
The table has a strong ethnographic character and a very decorative sculptural quality. Its elongated proportions, storage compartment and rich carved decoration make it a particularly appealing example of Ethiopian domestic material culture.
Condition
Wear, scratches, small chips, cracks, losses, surface marks and patina consistent with age and use. The handle area appears incomplete, probably missing an original leather strap or small carrying element. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The wooden table only. Stand not included.
