This finely made bronze implement is a Roman cosmetic or medical toiletry tool dating to the 1st–2nd century A.D. It consists of a pair of spring tweezers attached to a suspension loop, allowing it to be carried as part of a personal grooming or medical set. Compact instruments of this type were common throughout the Roman Empire and are regularly found in military sites, urban settlements, and domestic contexts.
Tweezers were indispensable tools in Roman daily life. They were used for personal grooming, including the removal of unwanted hair, but also by physicians for minor medical procedures such as extracting splinters, cleaning wounds, or handling small dressings. Wealthier individuals often owned complete toiletry sets comprising tweezers, ear scoops, nail cleaners, and probes, suspended together from a ring for convenient carrying.
Roman bronze instruments were produced in specialised workshops using cast and forged components, then carefully finished to create practical, durable tools suitable for everyday use. Such sets were traded widely across the Empire, reaching regions including present-day Germany, France, Britain, and the Netherlands, illustrating the standardisation of Roman craftsmanship and personal hygiene practices.
