Very well preserved, except for a crease in one corner of the paper (photography of the defect taken against the light).

Stegemann faced severe persecution following the rise of National Socialism. In 1936, authorities shut down an exhibition in which he was participating alongside the Hamburg avant-garde. Between 1937 and 1938, the Nazi regime confiscated 43 of his artworks, officially labeling them "degenerate art" (*Entartete Kunst*).
