Presented for auction by Second Vintage
This classic vintage Longines dress watch from the 1970s offers a striking combination of a beautifully preserved minimalist dial and an elegant rectangular cushion case. Driven by the in-house caliber L847.4 manual wind movement, it delivers a refined presence on the wrist characterized by its clean champagne face and stark black indices.
Brand: Longines
Reference Number: 1092
Serial Number: 55171105
Movement: Manual wind caliber L847.4
Dial: Champagne with a matte/brushed finish and printed black stick indices
Case Size: 36mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Gold-tone
Production Year: 1970s
Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: -7-10s/day, performing remarkably well.
Dial and Hands
The champagne dial features a subtle matte and brushed finish, creating an exceptionally clean and well-preserved minimalist aesthetic. It is free from any significant spotting, staining, or visible damage. Printed black stick indices provide sharp contrast, perfectly matched by the crisp printing of the Longines logo and text. The black stick hands maintain a clean finish with no visible oxidation or bending, remaining crisp and highly legible against the champagne backdrop.
Case and Crystal
The gold-tone rectangular cushion case displays honest wear, with visible plating loss along the high-contact lug edges and case flanks. Moderate surface scratches are present, consistent with age and use. The case design features an integrated bezel, leading smoothly to the flat crystal, which remains generally clear with only minor surface dust or light scratches. On the right flank, the crown is clearly signed with the Longines name and winged hourglass logo, retaining an intact gold-tone finish and well-defined coin edge texturing. The watch is completed by a stainless steel caseback bearing the exterior case number 20584535.
Movement
Inside the case beats the Longines manual wind caliber L847.4. The movement displays clean plates and bridges with no visible corrosion, while the screw heads and jewels appear in good condition. Engravings on the movement clearly read LONGINES WATCH CO SWISS, SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS, and UNADJUSTED, along with the caliber and serial numbers. Recording -7-10s/day on the timegrapher. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring contrast stitching. It remains in good wearable condition and is secured by a generic unsigned buckle.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The case exhibits honest wear with visible plating loss on the high-contact lug edges and flanks, alongside moderate surface scratches typical of a 1970s timepiece. Conversely, the dial and hands remain exceptionally clean and well-preserved. Supported by the recorded timegrapher data, the movement is performing very strongly.
Dimensions
The case measures 36mm across, excluding the crown.
Remarks
This Longines presents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a classic late 1970s dress watch with an exceptionally clean dial. The combination of its minimalist design and the reliable in-house manual wind movement makes it a compelling choice for enthusiasts of traditional Swiss watchmaking.
History
During the 1970s, Longines continued to produce elegant mechanical dress watches even as the industry began shifting toward quartz technology. The caliber L847 series was a notable in-house manual wind movement from this era, appreciated for its slim profile and reliable architecture. Watches from this period often featured cushion or rectangular cases, reflecting the design sensibilities of the decade while maintaining the refined, traditional aesthetic that has defined Longines since its founding.
